(1) Valentine's Day:

Valentine's Day comes on February 14. It is a special day to acknowledge those you love, particularly your sweetheart.

On this day, people send greeting cards or candies as a token of affection and good wishes to their family members, relatives or friends.

However, this is the day not just for the lovers between males and females, but for all relatives or friends you love.

(2) Saint Patrick's Day:

Many people wear something green in memory of Ireland (for its green landscape).

If you are not wearing something green, you may be pinched.

Many Irish immigrants and others in the U.S. march in parades, dance Irish jigs and sing Irish songs on streets.

(3) Easter:

Easter falls on the first Sunday after March 21 (after the first full moon).

It is a great religious festival in the U.S. because it celebrates the time when Jesus Christ rose from the death.

People call two days before Easter Good Friday, which is the time when Christ died on the cross at Calvary, the place near ancient Jerusalem. All Christians churches hold services on that day.

The egg is the symbol of new life that has some connection with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Later, people use dyed eggs and chocolate-made bunnies for egg-hunting and gift exchange as a token of peace.

(4) Mother's Day:

It is observed on the second Sunday in May to show our love and appreciation to our mothers.

Many people wear a red carnation on that day if their mother is living, or a white one if she has passed away.

Memorial Day:

Memorial Day, also known as Decoration Day, falls on May 30.

It is the day in memory of many Americans who have been killed during wars.

Many families and friends decorate the graves of the fallen with flags and wreaths of flowers.

Often, other parades and speeches are held honoring American veterans.

(5) Independence Day:

Also known as the Fourth of July, is one of the major holidays in the U.S. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The are a lot of firework displays and patriotic parades.

It is usually a family day letting people relax. Sometimes there are political speeches about labor.

(7) Halloween:

On the evening of October 31, children wear costumes such as ghosts, cats, witches, clowns or anything they can think of.

They usually carry bags and carved-out pumpkins and go calling on their neighbors or friends, saying, “ Trick or treat ! ”. At the same time, children receive candies or fruits as treats.

(7) Thanksgiving Day:

It generally comes on the last Thursday in November, and is a very important day for family reunions.

Thanks are offered in the churches for God's blessings. At home, a dinner, generally turkey, is served.

(8) Christmas:

Christmas, on December 25, is the most important festival because it is a celebration of Christ's birth.

It is an exciting time of the year for children.

Most Americans have Christmas trees and decorate them with sparkling ornaments and lights. All Christmas gifts are placed under the tree.

Sending Christmas cards to friends and relatives is a very popular activity during the holidays.

December 24, Christmas Eve, is for the family reunion.

Children believe that Santa Claus comes down the chimney bringing gifts to them.

Streets are also gaily decorated. Stores are filled with all kinds of gifts that people will buy for exchange among relatives and friends.

(9) New Year:

On New Year's Eve, some American families attend candlelight services at the churches.

It is also a popular night for couples to enjoy dances and parties.

At midnight, bells ring out the Old (year) and ring in the New (year).

(如果省去year, old 和new 還是要大寫)

On New Year's Day, many people exchange good wishes among friends.
